I'm a long time user of HL, among the first actually. I used many versions of HL in the past with no problem. This is a new system and I was able to use 2.1.7 HL just fine and play WW2 Fighters. I uninstalled HL (as I have done ever since the very first versions of HL) and installed 3.1.4 which installed perfectly.
HL 3.1.4 starts just fine. WW2F starts fine and launches into the team-selecting screen. Then, I get to the plane-selecting screen just fine. When the WW2F simulator starts (i.e. combat) however, the game runs for maybe 1 second (I'd be in the plane, engine running) then WW2F abruptly closes and HL then closes seconds later from its minimized position on the screen. One time I was able to capture an error message:
The above message appeared in a text box only one time after I tried restarting HL and WW2F over and over and over one night. When I tried re-installing HL 3.1.4 (after uninstalling it), it did not solve the problem. Re-installing VB did not solve the problem. I have not yet resorted to re-installing Win XP.
For what it's worth, the exact same type of problem happened on my Win98 machines after an HL upgrade in March 2002 and I could not play until getting a new PC which is used ONLY to play this game. WW2 Fighters is the only game on this new machine. (In the case of the Win 98 machines, HL would cease running and cause the whole PC to lock up). The XP machine does not lock up, but HL and WW2F close when entering the simulation. Please help as I love HL and love playing WW2 Fighters. Thanks in advance!

Hi Mongoose
I had the same with FA/18 and found it was my video driver, went back and all was ok again. (didnt get that error but)
The best help you can get is from the users of the lobby rooms
Hope this helps.
Edit: also have you right clicked on the game exe shortcut and chosen properties/compatability/run conpatibiliy mode for... try them too.

Hi
WW2f not working with most modern graphics cards correctly. In the HL faq is a solution for GF2 bassed cards whish can help you solve this problem. I have RAD 9700 and game no luck for me online and offline ... WW2f was designed to work with voodoo based videocards ... It can be played correctly on a old computer with win9x and a voodoo based videocard

Thanks for the replies. Hyper, I am able to play WW2F just fine offline, no video problems at all. Gunny, yes I tried the compatibility settings to no success. I have the latest video driver for my card. WHat I do not understand is, HOW could HL and WW2F work perfectly when using HL version 2.1.7 but now with the new HL 3.1.4 they do not work? I made no other change to my system other than to upgrade from 2.1.7 to 3.1.4 HL.

HL 2.1.7 is more that two years old. I do not think that you have Radeon 9700 the same time

Hyper, I should have been more careful in my typing...the version that worked fine was 2.10.170 just prior to upgrading to 3.1.4. This same problem has happened to some of my online wingmen as well and none of us can play (some of us used Dell machines, a few use their own creations). We all experienced the same type of problem after the upgrade to 3.1.4. One of my wingies has the exact same system as I do only with a 120gb hard drive. He upgraded to 3.1.4 and told me not to do it after getting the "abrupt termination of WW2F and HL" problem.
I upgraded only when forced to do so, and now I cannot play using HL. To reiterate, WW2F works perfectly with my 9700 Radeon card offline and with 2.10.170 of HL (when you still allowed us to use 2.10.170). The 2.10.170 version was downloaded from your site and installed on Nov 22, 2002, it isn't 2 years old.
