I finally made it work doing the following: click cancel and quickly select the game you want to play. You really have to do it quick otherwise HL will exit with RUN TIME ERRORS . Good luck

Somebody suggested to install Msvbvm50.exe from HyperLobby. I looked at MS Support website and saw that the two versions are not the same size:
