See if you can figure out what is going on here since it has me stumped.....

This all started when I put the no-CD rts.dll into FB. I couldn't get HL to work so it led to this sequence.

i) Uninstall FB. Remove the residual FB entry from the registry using RegCleaner and delete the FB folder. Now the system should be completely virginal wrt FB.

ii) Reinstall FB 1.0 from CD and run from desktop to check that it works. Errrg, get an error message saying the rts.dll windows image is bad and to check it against the CD.

iii) Shrug shoulders and repeat steps i) to ii) above but get the same result.

iv) Check rts.dll and it is 0kb. Look into data1.cab on CD1 and find rts.dll and it is also listed as 0kb. WTF? This has installed fine before from these CDs.

v) Luckily, I have a copy of the rts.dll from the previous install so I replace the 0kb rts.dll with the 860kb rts.dll and start FB. Yay, it works just fine; CD spins up, splash screen, etc. Choose to ignore this install glitch as just a glitch.

vi) Start HL 3.3.55 and it connects fine to the Internet. Choose a server and join game. Errg, HL minimizes and then NOTHING happens. After a few seconds, HL returns.

vii) Uninstall HL, remove residual entry from registry with RegCleaner and remove folder.

viii) Reinstall HL and repeat vi) above with same negative result.

ix) Install the 1.11 full patch and start FB from desktop to check that it works. All is fine.

x) Start HL and try to join a server. This time the CD spins up and I get the small splash screen (the one with the I-16) but then NOTHING and HL returns in a few seconds.

xi) Replace the rts.dll with the no-CD rts.dll and start FB to check. All is fine, no CD spinning and no small splach screen, just as advertised.

xii) Start HL and try to join a server but same result as in x) above. Huh? Why is the CD spinning?? The old rts.dll is in a folder called BACKUP so shouldn't be seen by either FB or HL.

xiii) Start ubi.com and choose a server. Join it and FB starts up just fine; no cd spin, no small splash screen. !!??

So FB runs fine by itself and through ubi.com.
But HL has two problems, it seems to be finding the original rts.dll which directs FB to start from CD and then it simply quits.

Any suggestions?

Alexi (the perplexed)

Fabulous! It worked. For some reason, HL was finding the il2fb.exe backup copy I had put in a folder within my FB folder!

Now all works fine.

Thanks again,

Alexi
