On 4 September 1939 this Bf109E-1 of II/JG77, piloted by Fw. Alfred Held shot down an RAF Wellington bomber while defending the Scharnhorst and Gneisenau. It was the first kill of an RAF aircraft by the Luftwaffe. Note the Top hat used as a personal symbol by Held, which was a left over from his Condor Legion days.
