after getting a new modem guests always get timed out

For years I have hosted a room on Hyperlobby without any problems at all, using a succession of ISP providers on dial up and then on wireless modem connections. Two days ago I was required to get a new modem, and now I have the problem that my guests get timed out. I have no problem joining any of the servers I have tried. I myself get into my hosted session without any difficulty. The problem persists even if I turn off my firewall and turn off my antivirus. My OS is Xp Pro 64bit, and the modem is a Verizon Novatel 551L 4G. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

Thanks, my modem is not in the list that I can see,

and as a computer long term user but technical novice who, after 10 years without a problem, has had a near fatal crash from {I was told} a root tip infection, I am uncertain about downloading software off the internet...

not sure what to do

By the way, it it not puzzling that I cannot successfully host, but I can join hosts and servers without any probelm??

hi Osian.

have you tried to access your router/modem settings?
most port forwarding is fairly straight forward.
access the router in your web browser, try this address 192.168.1.1
this should give you the router menu which should allow you to add the 21000 port needed to host.
you may need to set a static ip but hopefully not.

I heard about this ip earlier today, and searched for it in explorer, but was thoroughly confused by what came up, I am just too new to this...

any further specific pointers would be most helpful...

Have you tried the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone)setting on your router? It would make your connection open to all but it should work and work your way back to finding out what is going on.

I have no idea how to try this DMZ on my router, can you give me any directions for a novice to router settings?

This differs on each router but normally you login using the IP address of the router itself (like http://192.168.1.1 ), you enter your credentials and then go to Security then DMZ.

well, I am sorry I have to confess I am so new to this...

I THINK maybe I do not have a router, but only a wireless USB modem for internet access

so, would I need to be working inside Windows firewall to get the right settings?

Hmm normally this is done inside the browser. I dont know anything about wireless USB modem however. Have you tried calling the company?

I actually reloaded the modem software, still no luck

I wish there were some way to trouble shoot why the timeout is happening

i haven't been able to locate any info on your usb modem. i think that may be the issue. is there another way to connect it to your pc?

I have come to believe the modem is not the problem for a variety of reasons, but primarily that the predecessora worked just fine, and yhe hosting problem first appeared when I was still using yhe last, reliable modem...I think it is something that happened during the parallel install of Windows. I actually got this upgrade modem hoping against hope that it would solve the problem that appeared after the windows reinstall.I'm out of ideas at this point, despite all the wonderful help from you and everyone else...

it is way too much to expect, but it's a shame there's no way to diagnose the cause for the timeouts...

Anyway, thanks so much for your help, and if any more ideas come up please let me know

Do you know how to perform a TRACERT (aka TRACE ROUTE)? It is to find out the route of your connetcion to see where is the bottleneck. Use the CMD prompt and type 'TRACERT'

then add the IP that you know say a HL game server IP that you know. Anything that has higher than 300ms is bad. If you get timed out look at which server you are timed out on. This should help you diagnose where is the problem. If its all timed out then its a open port problem or ISP issue.
