When I load up HL I can't see the ping bars, start button pills and maximise, minimise, close buttons. I have tried disabling every setting there is in Norton and Windows firewall is not on. I am runnning windows Vista, have the lastest version of HL and pretty sure I have everything updated to what it should be. I can join other servers no dramas, but I can't host a game. Can anybody help me please??

Yes I am using a router and I wasn't getting any red bars at all. After an exhaustive search I found a thread here that helped me out and it worked. Changing the ...\ to ..\ in the skin.ini file.

Cool. That's a Vindows Vista issue only with with service pack1.
If you had mentioned service pack 1 then I would have directed you to this thread
