I finally got connected and have joined a few games. But, so far, all I've been able to do is fly around and hit a few ground targets. I never see and enemy aircraft. What am I doing wrong? Question

Avoid "Full real" servers.
You can spend hours on those servers and see nothing
but Oleg's dull scenery.

Try servers with more arcadish/easy settings.

While less realistic they are more fun.

"Full Real" games are like watching paint dry, but a lot less fun.

Study the in-game briefings closely. There are usually targets defined for offensive and/or defensive operations. Stake out those areas and keep your eyes open for the enemy, or clues he may be around (AA firing; shadows of other aircraft on the ground; communications from team-mates who have located the enemy).

A good bit of advice would be to install one of (or all of) the popular voice comms programs. You can bet that any squads you may be flying with don't bother with text chat, preferring the flexability that real-time voice comms offers to the virtual pilot. Be sure to disable all in-game voice comms (not AI chat stuff, but IL-2's built-in voice comms) before using either of the programs below:

TeamSpeak : http://www.goteamspeak.com/

Ventrillo: http://www.ventrilo.com/

Once you start flying as part of the team -whichever that may be- you'll see a real increase in both your enjoyment of the game and in your combat opportunities.

That, sir, is your opinion. Mine differs.

Full real games may be boring and dull, but at least they waste a lot of time....

Must just be a lack of skill. Glad the pilots defending our countries don't feel that way about their scenery. Just my feelings on it.

Good pionters Sandman. Also keep a good eye on the map (if not during game, in select plane area) and your surrounding scenery. Remember your enemy will be attacking your base, so find the shortest route from your base to theirs. They will most likely be taking that route. Setup on that route. Get some alt and keep your eyes open. You will find them. ~S~ and good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a lack of skill, it's a lack of TIME.
Yes, on a rainy sunday I might join a "Full Real" server.
But time is valuable, and spending hours with mud movers
in a full real server just so I can become a full real snob ain't
worth my time.

Various levels of settings are available in HL, choose what suits
your tastes and schedule best.

Don't listen to the stuck up intolerant full real snobs.
They are an insufferable lot.

Fly what you like.

Dunno, I dont need hours to find action on server that has more than 5ppl on it

couple hints
- taking off helps you in finding action
- looking only though your gunsight at max zoom doesnt help finding action
- find someone to tag with, get on comms (yes, some servers offer sound communication server as well to be used) do some teamwork.
- also those "FR snobs" are pretty helpful if you bother to ask for it, of course if you dedicate yourself to whining about their settings, you might find yourself on "muted" in notime
- learning some basic skills like identifying your targets before firing helps you a lot in blending in to more challenging enviroments
