Whenever I start HL, it loads for a second, then I get a generic XP error message (asking me if I want to send an error report). I have installed the VB runtimes several times, as well as uninstalling and reinstalling HL (both the new "beta" version and the current version). I have also run sfc.exe and have not found any missing files. My system specs are

Computer manufacturer: Custom
CPU: Pentium 4 2.5 GHZ
RAM: 512 MB
Video Card: Radeon 9500 Pro
OS: Windows XP Home Edition
Games: LOMAC
HL Version: 3.3.55 and 3.4.58
Internet Explorer version: 6

Verinfo is:

Win NT: 5.1.A28 - Service Pack 1
hlpro.exe 3.4.0.58
aping.exe 1.0.0.16
dexec.exe 1.0.0.5
mswinsck.ocx 6.0.89.88
msvbvm50.dll 5.2.82.44
asycfilt.dll 3.50.5014.0
comcat.dll 5.0.2600.1
ctl3d.dll No Version Info available!
ctl3dnt.dll No Version Info available!
oleaut32.dll 3.50.5016.0
olepro32.dll 5.0.5014.0
stdole2.tlb 3.50.5014.0

Windows XP does not need install VB5 runtime because its already includet in. This tip is for w95 and w98 users ....

Hl should work on all configuration exclude:
1./ Chinese, Japanese, Korean etc Windows
2./ Not working on toasters
3./ Cant be used in mobile phones, PDA, Calculators and related devices ...

All other fourten thousands computer configurations is OK (confirmed) ....

In 90% of cases causing the problems with windows and another software:
1./ Antiviral protection
2./ Personal firewals
3./ Missconfigured system (also overclocked)
4./ System damaged by some optimalizitaion programs
5./ Bad RAM chips or another computer components
6./ Etc ...

Well, this did work for me a couple months ago, but it was uninstalled. Your reply, while informative, wasn't very helpful to me specifically - I would appreciate any help.

EDIT: I have no overclocked or (to my knowledge) defective hardware.
