Whenever I start HL, it loads for a second, then I get a generic XP error message (asking me if I want to send an error report). I have also run sfc.exe and have not found any missing files. My system specs are

Well, this did work for me a couple months ago, but it was uninstalled. Your reply, while informative, wasn't very helpful to me specifically - I would appreciate any help.
EDIT: I have no overclocked or (to my knowledge) defective hardware.
