Also, does anyone know how to throttle the amount of bandwidth used by an IL2 FB server? Right now, about every 10 users is 1 mb/s of usage. Seems extremely high, and I would like to reduce this to a reasonable level.
Thanks,

Hi, I cant answer the question in the config.ini question but I can tell you that you will save bandwidth if you uncheck skin download box as they can be over 1 meg each per player. Even when hosting put in the game description *please uncheck skindownload* as its meant to help the overall game play (lag) and system resources.
Hope it helps

Yes, that is very good advice.
But, let me clarify my question here, in case anyone can help. My Data Center folks have recently come to me and said I am using too much of the 'pipe'. I have reduced the server from 25 to 21 players, and these are the results:
Average In: 1581.4 kb/s
Average Out: 403.7 kb/s
As you can see, the In data is much higher than the OUT data. I see no need for a nearly 4:1 ratio of in to out data, and in my opinion this is a waste of bandwidth. What I am trying to do is find a setting, that is sent to the client, which gives the maximum rate for the server at which they can communicate.
Does that make more sense? Any ideas or help? I am trying everything I know how to do, and can find, but I think there is a hidden setting somewhere which will accomplish this. Just looking for the magic setting...
Thanks,

Just a Question.
Does it make any difference when you set your connection to 56k in the setup/network?
I have always been told to set it to 56k as most other players have theres set to it aswell. (host and the players). meant to make the gameplay better. or did with IL2
I have broadband and have never run at cable settings always at 56k and have never measured the amount of bandwidth used per second and are curious if they make a difference.
I am thinking that altering your bandwidth through this will force you to host smaller smaller games
I will email Tully (ubisoftmod) and see if he can help you out.

Thanks much for the help Gunny. I appreciate it greatly! My understanding is that the netspeed in your config only affects your connection. That leaves me to rely on everyone to set their netspeed to 56k. I would rather not rely on people to do this, and enforce it myself. Let me know if Tully has any ideas. I have till the ned of the month to rectify the situation, or I am stuck with a much larger bill...

From what I can work out, server side bandwidth is "all there is" regardless of your settings. Client side bandwidth is set client side. HL sets to 14.4kb (IIRC) by default if clients are joining via HL, but some change the hlpro.ini settings to bump it up. The server portions out server upload according to client side bandwidth settings, so if you have 8 clients all set to 14.4k and one set to 1Mb, the one will get about 70-80% of the server time and the rest will suffer lag and warp.
The trick is to educate everyone to keep their settings conservative, the game runs fine with low bandwidth settings. If you're having trouble, it's because either your connection is intermittent (suffering pauses), because someone is set to significatly higher bandwidth than everyone else, or because the server machine or connection is trying to work beyond it's capacity.
