OK. Here's the newest wrinkle in this saga:
HL WILL RUN IN SAFE MODE !!
Still won't in normal mode though. |

Video issues or sound issues.
Try deleting the sound files.
They are in the Skins/Common/SOUNDS folder in the HL installation folder.
Many moons ago we had a problem with Creative sound cards
pooping out when the HL sounds started.

no change.
found a russian/polish/whatever site where someone suggested some "hackers" got into hl server and something got screwed up.
I find it strange more people haven't complained about this. And that Jiri is somewhat less than helpful.
Doesn't seem like him |

The fact that you can run HL in safe mode points to a software or driver conflict.
I have a clean installation of XP on a new machine. To test this theory
I installed Hyperlobby and it runs great, launched 1946 perfectly.
It has a Nvidia 8600 video card and a on board "sound max" "sound card".
Nvidia Nforce chipset ASUS A8N-SLI motherboard. |

I'm fast coming to that point (xp re-install). No reason for it but it seems to be the option of last resort.
Thanks for your input ! |

XP has a recovery option that works pretty good.
As long as you are not infested with a virus or a worm
you can recover the system.
I use nothing but OEM discs. if you have a OEM XP disc all you
have to do is follow the instructions up to the point
of nuking it and doing a re-install, at that point XP will ask you
to press R for a recovery.
Early on in the installation you can select R for repair, but it's usless
unless you know a specific file you need to re-install.
The automated recovery is the last option before XP does a full re-install.

I've done it a few times (just copy over the old install). It's not really an install but it is good.
Anyways, without having done ANYTHING (other than all the driver cleans and defrags etc etc), it is now running .
On bootup , after internet con first thing I try is HL. Well, after all this it now works again.
For how long, I don't know. I'll keep the re-install in my back pocket for the time being.
Thanks for your time in this. |

driver cleans seems to be the answer.
In safe mode no drivers are loaded.

Well, that's just not it. I've run those cleaner programs at least a dozen times since this problem started. Never helped.
I honestly didn't do anything since the last attempt yesterday (no start) to today (did start). |

I've always run updates with no issues.
THEN one day it just started working again. I didn't do anything else other than to keep trying to access it. One day, it started normally. I set up a new restore point in case it started acting up again but never did.
It's been working fine ever since.
I have NO solution to this issue. |

No compatible data source was found for this control. Please add an intrinsic data control or a remote data control to the form
This is what it says exactly, unfortunatly I have no freakin idea what its talkin about. |

OK, I tried the safe-mode, but no joy there. I searched everywhere I could think of, to no avail. But I noticed that a lot of other programs werent working either, such as the windows installer package wouldnt work with some installs, windows live mail shortcuts were dead, ALL OF THEM,etc.
So after some head scratching and much deliberation, I uninstalled service pack 3 from windows,,, and guess what?
JOY IN MUDDVILLE! The mighty casey has hit a home run!
Not really sure what it was exactly with SP3, but everything works again.
And with all due respect, Jiri, your response, and quite fast too, that it was a virus or a worm is, to say the least, indicitave of someone who doesnt care, as it is the first thing you hear coming from uninterested support techs. (and noobs in computer help irc channels)
What a bummer, this program is depended on by a devoted group of online simulator enthusiasts, and this program is pretty much an only option for some games.

With no respect, you are slagging Jiri for no reason.
He provides this software and web hosting FREE of charge.
Some of us try to answer the many questions you newbs come to post.
Your show of arrogance and ungratefullness is unappreciated.
For your information, most expert information on the web points to a virus
or a worm as one of the causes of this problem.
Also, anyone with half a brain would have been smart enough to
inform us of what operating system he/ she has installed on the computer?
Piss off kid.

A drunken monkey could tell that I am running XP from my posts,
and all those online experts that say its a virus,
are wrong.
